Hospitals lay off staff, cut back services as revenues dive
U.S. hospital revenues have plummeted, forcing layoffs, reductions in services, delayed projects and equipment purchases, and even the closure of entire departments. Preventive care is an early casualty as consumers cut back
Preventive health care often is the first to go as consumers cut back spending because of the recession. Some state programs offer free or reduced-cost preventive screenings, such as colonoscopies and mammograms, but people in some areas must save for months or years to afford the screenings. USA TODAY
