Computer-aided Physician Order Entry of Rx

Editor’s note: Implementation of CPOE at early adopters has been ongoing for more than 10 years. Below are the adoption rates. There are well documented savings associated with CPOE in terms of hard dollars as well as lives saved and medication errors avoided. One must ask why hasn’t the adoption of the technology been more pervasive. In many of the institutions reporting implementation of systems, the systems are not pervasive in their institution.

A new survey of health care CIOs regarding adoption of computerized physician order entry (CPOE) systems found:
  • 59.4% reported that their organizations currently have CPOE “at some level of adoption.”
  • Of these, 26.7% have had CPOE in place for about a year.
  • 17.6% have had such systems for five or more years.
  • 44.7% report 20% or fewer orders entered by physicians.
