Reducing Hospital Infections Does Not Require an Overhaul of the Entire Health Care System

Editor’s note: We don’t have to enact health care reform to make the necessary changes to address the infection rates in hospitals. CMS has recently enacted policies that do not pay for these ‘Never Events’. Commercial insurers need to uniformly adopt similar rules, and ensure that plan participants are not made to pay for these medical errors either.

“Americans don’t expect to get additional infections when they go into the hospital. Stopping health care associated infections and improving the quality of care is one of our top priorities…When we enact health reform, we can improve quality, help control costs and ensure success stories like the Michigan Keystone ICU Project become the rule, not the exception.” (For more details, go to item no.1.) —HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius
