What is Evidenced Based Medicine

Editor’s note: Can evidence based medicine make a difference AND how do consumers think about it and react to it?

“Perception vs. Reality: Evidence-Based Medicine, California Voters, and the Implications for Health Care Reform.”  This report, put out by the Campaign for Effective Care, summarizes the results of a survey commissioned to find out how voters feel about evidence-based medicine and the role it plays in their interactions with clinicians.  According to the findings, voters strongly support reforms that result in doctors and patients receiving evidence about effective prevention, diagnoses, and treatment.  In addition to providing insight into voters’ concerns, this report provides thoughtful, articulate language on the need for comparative effectiveness research and the challenges involved in developing, disseminating, and using evidence-based medical research. (http://www.effectivepatientcare.org/images/0909%20CEPC%20Brownlee%20Report%20on%20EBM.pdf)
