Health Care: A tax by any other name is still a tax

USA Today (9/21, Jackson) reports the President, during his “unprecedented presidential talk show blitz Sunday…said requiring Americans to buy health insurance does not amount to a tax hike.” The President “disputed the contention” that requiring all Americans to buy health insurance or face fines “amounts to tax increase, saying it will save money for taxpayers who are bearing the costs of medical care for uninsured patients.” The White House “scheduled the interviews, all taped Friday afternoon, as part of its effort to promote major health care legislation winding its way through Congress.”

The Los Angeles Times (9/21, Silva) reports the President, “acknowledging that he hasn’t persuaded the American public and Congress to support sweeping changes to healthcare,” offered a “humbling admission on Sunday: His message is sometimes not ‘breaking through.'” The “president’s Sunday blitz — which skipped only Fox — marked yet another effort to explain to a divided public why he is trying to remake the healthcare system.”
