How Healthy is Your Hospital?

Consumer Reports, August 2009

When it comes to rating a hospital’s cleanliness and adherence to patient safety measures, patients may find it disturbingly shocking that hospitals are far from being their squeaky clean image. In a spring 2009 survey conducted by Consumer Reports, only 5% of patients versus 26% of nurses reported seeing hospital staff not washing their hands.

The survey also found that:

o        4% of patients versus 28% of nurses saw problems with hospital cleanliness;

o        13% of patients versus 38% of nurses said care wasn’t coordinated properly;

o        5% of patients versus 11% of nurses reported that wrong dosage or medication was administered.
