What to do About Long Term Health Care Costs

Bending the Curve: Effective Steps to Address Long-Term Health Care Spending Growth

Brookings Institution, September 2009

As the health care reform debate continues its feverish pitch, the Brookings Institution convened health policy experts and economists to strategize feasible steps to bending the cost curve. The group’s strategy comprises four primary recommendations:

o        Invest in better information and tools to guide and support a reformed system;

o        Transition to accountable payment systems that reward providers for delivering lower-cost, high-quality care;

o        Restructure the health insurance system to lower the rate of premium cost growth; and

o        Support and encourage better individual choices to enhance the patient role in improving health and lowering health care costs.
