Medical Resident’s Fatigue

Editor’s note: Interesting findings, but I suspect they are not surprising to the residents or their institutions.

——

In a 2003-2008 study, internal medicine residents were asked about their medical errors, if any, as well as quality of life, fatigue, burnout, depression and sleepiness. The survey found:

* 39% reported at least one major medical error during the study period

* For every point increase in the fatigue score, doctors were 14% more likely to make a medical error

* For every point increase in the sleepiness score, doctors were 10% more likely to err

* Medical errors were also linked to burnout, depression and overall quality of life
