Physician Supply

A new study of the number of active physicians in the United States found:
  • 67,000 (10%) fewer active physicians than previous calculations suggested.
  • The physician work force is also younger than previously estimated, with a greater proportion of doctors in their 20s and 30s and fewer who are 65 and older.
  • The number of active physicians are projected to increase by about 20% between 2005 and 2020.
  • By 2020, nearly 9%, or 957,000 of active physicians will be 65 or older, or half as many as had been predicted previously (18% or 1,050,000).
