Medicare Premiums Increase 15%

Editor’s note: A 15% rate increase (hold harmless provision or not) will have to be paid by participants at some point. In additon, this is another demonstration that the Federal Government does not have the capacity or the will to control health care costs in their federally run Medicare program. Why will anything in health reform change that reality?

The basic Medicare premium will increase next year by 15%, to $110.50 a month, but 73% of beneficiaries will be covered by a “hold-harmless” provision that allows them to pay their premiums at the 2009 rate.Source:  “CMS ANNOUNCES MEDICARE PREMIUMS, DEDUCTIBLES FOR 2010”, CMS Office of Public Affairs, October 16, 2009, http://www.cms.hhs.gov/apps/media/press/factsheet.asp?Counter=3534
