Where Do the Health Care Payments Come From

Editors note: Remember this doesn’t include Medicare for people 65 and older. The balance of payment source would be dramatically different if they were included.

Distribution of total expenses for adults ages 18-44 by source of payment, 1996 and 2006
Source of Payment 1996 2006
Private Insurance 61.4% 54.4%
Out of pocket 18.6% 21.3%
Medicaid 10.4% 13.7%
Other 9.5% 10.6%
